What is NTN and Why Do You Need It?

NTN (National Tax Number) is your unique tax identification number issued by FBR Pakistan. It is required for filing income tax returns, registering for sales tax, opening corporate bank accounts, entering government tenders, and for many business transactions.

For individual taxpayers (salaried, freelancers, rental income earners), your CNIC number itself serves as your NTN. For businesses, companies, and partnerships, a separate NTN is issued for the business entity.

Good News: NTN registration is completely FREE on FBR IRIS. No government fee is charged. The process is online and can be done from home without visiting any FBR office.

NTN for Business vs Individual — Key Differences

  • Individual NTN: Your 13-digit CNIC number is your NTN. No separate registration needed — just activate on IRIS
  • Business/Company NTN: A separate 7-digit NTN is issued for your business entity, different from your personal NTN
  • You can have both a personal NTN (as individual) and a business NTN (for your company) simultaneously
  • For filing returns, use the NTN corresponding to the income head — personal income on personal NTN, company income on company NTN

After NTN — Get on the Active Taxpayers List (ATL)

Having an NTN alone is not enough. To enjoy lower tax rates as a "filer," you must appear on FBR's Active Taxpayers List (ATL). To get on ATL:

  • File your income tax return for the latest completed tax year
  • ATL is updated every Sunday by FBR
  • You will appear on ATL approximately one week after filing your return
  • ATL status can be checked at atl.fbr.gov.pk or via SMS (Type ATL [space] CNIC to 9966)
