Ghotki returns range from salaried plant employees to contractors, mill suppliers and landowners. This page explains what each needs to include.
Salaried Employees
Enter salary, taxable benefits and tax deducted as shown on the salary certificate. Exempt items such as certain medical reimbursements are shown separately. If too much tax was deducted, the return is the way to claim the refund.
Contractors
List each contract, the payments received and the tax deducted. Deduct fuel, wages, vehicle repairs, rent and depreciation of equipment to arrive at profit. Some deductions on contracts may be minimum tax, so the treatment should be checked.
Landowners
Crop income is entered as agricultural income; Sindh agricultural income tax paid is noted.
Traders
Profit is sales less purchases and expenses, with stock counted at 30 June.
Wealth Statement
Houses, land, vehicles, gold, bank balances and investments are listed, and the year's increase explained by declared income and receipts.
Common Problems
Plant employees who also own rented property in Sukkur or Karachi sometimes forget to declare the rent. Including every income source avoids later notices.
Plant Employees Who Move
Engineers transferred between plants, or who join mid-year, may have two salary certificates. Both are combined in the return so that the total salary and total tax withheld are correct.
