Becoming a tax filer in Pakistan is now essential for individuals, freelancers, business owners, and salaried persons alike. Registering with FBR and appearing on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) saves you significantly on banking, property, and vehicle transaction taxes — and protects you from non-filer penalties.
Why You Should Become a Filer
Being an active filer on the FBR ATL gives you direct financial advantages on almost every major transaction in Pakistan. Here's what changes once your name appears on the ATL:
Lower Banking WHT
Reduced withholding tax on cash withdrawals and transactions
Property Tax Relief
Up to 50% lower WHT on property purchase and sale
Vehicle Registration
Filer rate on new vehicle token tax and transfer charges
Visa & Loan Approval
Stronger financial profile for visa and financing applications
Legal Compliance
Avoid FBR notices, penalties, and audit exposure
Business Credibility
Mandatory for tendering, contracts, and business registration
Step 1: Register for NTN Online
Before filing your taxes, you must first obtain a National Tax Number (NTN) through the official FBR IRIS portal. This is free of cost and can be done from home in under 30 minutes.
01
Visit FBR IRIS Portal
Go to
iris.fbr.gov.pk and click on
"Registration for Unregistered Person" on the home screen.
02
Enter Your Basic Information
Provide your CNIC number, mobile number registered with your CNIC, and a valid email address.
Use the SIM registered on your own CNIC
03
Verify via OTP
An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number. Enter it within the time limit to proceed.
04
Complete the Registration Form
Fill in your address, business/employment details, and income source. Double-check all information before submitting.
05
Receive Your NTN
Your NTN will be assigned automatically. You can view it in your IRIS profile dashboard immediately after registration.
NTN is your CNIC number for individuals
Step 2: File Your Income Tax Return
Having an NTN alone does not make you an active filer. You must file an annual income tax return and wealth statement through the FBR IRIS portal to appear on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL).
What to declare in your return:
Annual income from all sources
Business or freelance earnings
Rental income (if any)
Capital gains
Bank account balances
Owned properties
Vehicles owned
Investments & assets
The income tax return for FY 2024–25 is due by 30 June 2026 for individuals and AOPs. Filing before the deadline is critical to ensure ATL status for the next year.
Step 3: Check Your ATL Status
After filing, your name will appear on the Active Taxpayer List (ATL) published by FBR every year. You can verify your status using either of these methods:
Two Easy Ways to Verify ATL Status
Check if you are an active filer using your CNIC number through these official channels:
SMS: Send your CNIC (13 digits, no dashes) to 9966
Documents Required
Keep these documents ready before starting your NTN registration and tax return filing process:
CNIC (front & back)
CNIC-registered SIM
Active email address
Salary slips / payslips
Bank statements (6–12 months)
Business registration (if any)
Property ownership documents
Utility bills (for address proof)
Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs to become a filer in Pakistan?
Every individual with taxable income, freelancers earning from abroad, business owners, property owners, and anyone who wants to save on banking and property transaction taxes should become a filer.
What is the difference between NTN and ATL?
NTN (National Tax Number) is your unique tax identification number. ATL (Active Taxpayer List) is the list of filers published by FBR. You get an NTN first, then file a return to appear on ATL. Both are required for full filer benefits.
Is NTN registration free?
Yes, NTN registration through the FBR IRIS portal is completely free. Be cautious of third parties charging unnecessary fees for the registration itself — though professional assistance for filing your return is a separate, legitimate service.
How long does it take to appear on ATL?
After filing your tax return, your name typically appears on the ATL within 24–72 hours. The ATL is updated regularly by FBR throughout the year.
What happens if I miss the filing deadline?
Missing the deadline may result in late filing penalties (PKR 1,000 per month) and your name will not appear on the ATL until you file. You can still file a late return, but timely filing is always recommended to avoid penalties.
