In the Wix vs custom website choice, a builder suits a one-person business that wants to build its own simple site and can pay a monthly dollar fee. A custom-built site suits Pakistani businesses that need COD, local payments, full SEO control and ownership. Our 5-page site starts at a one-off Rs 40,500 plus hosting.

Key Takeaways
- Website builders such as Wix and Squarespace bill a recurring fee, usually in dollars, for as long as the site is live.
- Builders' built-in checkouts rely on international payment processors, and Stripe does not list Pakistan as a supported country.
- You can keep your domain, but you cannot move a builder's design to other hosting; leaving means rebuilding.
- A builder is honestly enough for a simple portfolio or a short-term test of an idea.
- A developer-built site costs more at the start but less each month, and you own the code and can move it.
Wix vs Custom Website: Which Should You Choose?
A website builder is a service where you design and host your website inside one company's system for a monthly fee. Wix and Squarespace are the best known. A custom website, in this guide, means a site a developer builds for you on open software such as WordPress or on code, hosted on an account in your name.
Builders are good products. The question for a Pakistani business is whether their billing, payments and lock-in fit how you sell. For many, they do not, and for some, they are the sensible choice.
How Do Builders and Custom Sites Compare?
| Factor | Wix or Squarespace | Developer-built site |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low; you build it yourself | From Rs 40,500 for up to 5 pages |
| Ongoing cost | Monthly or yearly plan, priced in dollars for most regions | Hosting, roughly Rs 5,500 to 15,000 a year on shared plans, plus domain |
| Accepting payments | Only on higher plans, through supported processors | COD, bank transfer and local gateways |
| SEO control | Good basics; limited technical control | Full control of code, speed and structure |
| Moving away | Design cannot be moved; content export is limited | Files and database move to any host |
| Who does the work | You | The developer, then you edit content |
Can You Take Payments on Wix in Pakistan?
This is the biggest practical limit. On Wix's upgrade page, as viewed on 29 October 2026, accepting payments appears only on the Core plan and above, not on the Light plan. Builders' own checkouts are designed around international processors. Stripe's global availability page does not list Pakistan, so a Pakistan-registered business cannot use Stripe-based checkouts.
Squarespace's pricing page also shows a 2% transaction fee on online store sales on its Basic plan, with 0% on higher plans. Card processing is charged separately.
Pakistani shoppers often prefer cash on delivery, JazzCash or Easypaisa. Builders do not support these as smoothly as WordPress, WooCommerce or Shopify do. If you plan to sell products in Pakistan, compare Shopify vs WooCommerce instead, and read our guide to Stripe and PayPal in Pakistan before choosing any payment set-up.
Why Does Dollar Billing Matter?
Wix states that prices and currency vary by location, and the dollar prices shown are for reference. For a Pakistani owner, a dollar-priced plan has three effects:
- the rupee cost rises whenever the rupee weakens
- you need a card that works for international payments, and renewals fail if it is blocked or expired
- you pay for as long as the site is live, with no point at which it is paid off
A developer-built site has a one-off build cost and a rupee hosting bill. Our domain and hosting price guide lists current local hosting ranges.
What Does Each Cost Over Three Years?
Example figures only. The builder plan below is an assumed $20 a month to make the maths easy; check the current price for your location on the builder's own page.
| Over 3 years | Builder (assumed $20 a month) | Our starter website |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Your own time | Rs 40,500 one-off |
| Plan or hosting | $20 x 36 = $720 | Rs 16,500 to 45,000 on shared hosting |
| Domain | Often free for the first year, then renewal | Yearly renewal in your name |
| Payments in Pakistan | Limited | COD and local gateway options |
The builder can still be cheaper if your own time is free and you need no local payments. The point of the example is to compare the full three years, not only the first month.
What About SEO and Ownership?
Builders handle basic SEO well: page titles, descriptions, sitemaps and mobile layouts. Where they fall short is control. You cannot always change how pages load, remove scripts you do not need, or fine-tune structure for speed on slower mobile connections. Test any site you are considering with Google's PageSpeed Insights on the mobile setting.
Ownership is simpler to explain. You can register your domain in your own name and point it at a builder. The design and site structure, though, live only inside that builder. If you leave, you rebuild. With a WordPress or coded site, the files and database are yours to move. Our guide on who owns your website covers this in detail.
When Is a Website Builder Honestly Enough?
A builder is the right choice in these cases:
- you are a freelancer, photographer or consultant who needs a simple portfolio and enjoys doing it yourself
- you want to test an idea for a few months before paying for a proper build
- you do not need to take payments online in Pakistan
- you have a working international card and are comfortable with a dollar bill
If two or more of these apply, try a builder first. You can move to a developer-built site when the business grows.
What We Would Build for You
For a business that has outgrown a builder, or wants to skip it, we build WordPress sites from Rs 40,500 for up to 5 pages and Rs 85,500 for up to 10. A one-page campaign site starts at Rs 22,500. The domain and hosting are registered in your name, and you can edit text and images yourself after handover. See our business websites service for what is included.
How to Decide in Ten Minutes
- List what the website must do this year, especially payments.
- Check the builder's current price for your location, then multiply by 36 months.
- Ask two developers for a fixed quote on the same scope.
- Compare three-year totals and who will do the work.

How We Researched This Guide
Plan features and fees come from the Wix upgrade page and Squarespace pricing page, and Stripe availability from Stripe's global page, all viewed 29 October 2026. Builder prices vary by location, so we quote none as fact. Hosting ranges come from our hosting guide, build prices are our own packages, and the three-year table is illustrative.
