Website subscription vs one time build: a subscription spreads the cost into a monthly fee that often includes hosting and updates, but you may not own the site and it can stop when payments stop. A one-time build costs more upfront and you own it. Compare the total over 3 years and read the exit terms.

Key Takeaways
- A subscription lowers the upfront cost but usually costs more over several years.
- Check who owns the domain, design, content and files under each model.
- Many subscriptions end with the site switched off if you stop paying.
- A one-time build is yours; hosting and maintenance are separate, optional costs.
- Compare total cost over three years and the exit terms before signing.
How Do the Two Models Work?
Under a website subscription, sometimes called renting a website, you pay a monthly fee and the provider builds the site, hosts it and keeps it updated. Upfront cost is low or zero. Under a one-time build, you pay for the design and development once, and the finished site belongs to you. Hosting, domain and maintenance are then separate, and you can choose who provides them. Both models are legitimate; the difference is in total cost, ownership and what happens when the relationship ends.
How Do You Compare Total Cost Over Three Years?
Do the sum for 36 months, not one. For a subscription, multiply the monthly fee by 36 and add any setup fee. For a one-time build, add the build price, three years of domain and hosting, and any maintenance plan you choose. A worked example with our own prices: a business website from Rs 40,500, plus three years of your own domain and hosting, plus our optional maintenance from Rs 7,200 a month if you want it. Then put the subscription total beside it, and compare what each includes.
| Cost item | Subscription | One-time build |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront | Low or none | Build price |
| Monthly | Fixed fee for the whole term | Optional maintenance only |
| Hosting and domain | Often included | Paid separately, in your name |
| Changes | Sometimes included, sometimes limited | Under maintenance, or quoted per task |
| After three years | Fees continue for as long as the site runs | Only running costs continue |
Who Owns a Subscription Website?
This is the most important question. In many subscription contracts, the provider owns the design and the files, and sometimes even registers the domain in its own name. You are licensing the website, not buying it. Ask in writing who owns the domain, the design, the content you wrote, the photos, and the underlying files. Our guide on who owns your website explains what to check.
What Happens When You Stop Paying?
- Some subscriptions switch the site off and keep the design.
- Some let you buy out the site for a fee, which should be stated upfront.
- Some release the domain to you but not the files.
- Some have a minimum term with charges for leaving early.
Read the exit terms before signing, and make sure the domain is in your name either way, so you can at least move your address.
Website Subscription vs One-Time Build: Which Suits You?
| A subscription can suit you if | A one-time build suits you if |
|---|---|
| Cash flow makes any upfront payment hard | You want to own the site outright |
| You need a simple site for a short period | You plan to keep the site for years |
| The contract gives you the domain and a fair buy-out | You want freedom to change provider |
| Updates are genuinely included and frequent | You prefer to pay for maintenance only when needed |
How We Work
We build websites for a one-time price, published on our pricing page, with payment in stages rather than all upfront. The domain and hosting are registered in your name, and the finished site and its files are yours. Maintenance is optional, from Rs 7,200 a month, and you can stop or move to another provider at any time. Our business website packages list what each build includes. Our guide on website maintenance charges explains what a plan covers.
